Air Brake Cylinder Cleaning

Parts

These parts are cast aluminum, stainless steel and brass.  They have some tight recesses and holes.

The parts are painted and have some corrosion on the inside, along with grease and other contaminants.

Equipment

1 Sonicor ultrasonic cleaner, 1 dip tank and shop air for drying

Chemistries/Solutions Used

Optimum Cleaning Systems Ultrasonic Cleaner (10:1 ratio, heated to 155°F, OCS phosporic acid cleaner and brightener at a 4:1 dilution ratio

Testing

10 test were completed, 7 exterior parts, 3 interior parts.  3 heavily painted parts, 5 corroded parts, 1 part with grease, 1 part with complicated holes, aluminum, stainless, brass and plastic parts tested

Conclusion
  • Most paint should be removed before deep cleaning by pre-soaking and using a cabinet washer with OCS NFH2002 cleaner, in order to keep the bath clean.

  • Cleaning with ultrasonics and OCS H2002U seems to deep clean all parts in 10-15 minutes

  • Soaking in F-10 and recleaning in ultrasonics appears to be a relatively quick and inexpensive way to remove corrsion and brighten the parts

  • O-Ring removal can be done without having to swell the O-Rings, because the ultrasonics and chemistry is helping to break the bond that holds them

  • All of the parts were blown dry with compressed shop air.  None of the parts were rinsed.
