Blind Holes: Dental Implants

Subject

Removal of contaminants in threaded blind hole of titanium dental implants.

The contaminants are chips and oils.

Equipment

Sonicor model ultrasonic with sweep, rotating basket, ultrasonic rinse, and hot air dry

Chemistry/Solutions Used

OCS ultrasonic cleaner at an 8:1 dilution ratio at 155°F

DI water heated to 160°F

Tests

It took 4 steps to complete this cleaning process. Pieces were checked under a power scope and checked with a black light in all the steps. Oil and chips are present. Parts were put in a rotating basket for 2 minutes, blown dry, checked all 3 with probe and black light then eventually led to no observable contaminants.

Conclusion

After cleaning with ultrasonic alone there still was some contaminants. Using the rotating basket in conjunction with ultrasonic appears to give desired results. 3 tank system: ultrasonic wash, ultrasonic rinse, hot air dry with rotating basket in all 3 stages are recommended.
