Carburetors

Subject

Cleaning used carburetors.  Soils are fuel residue, carbon, dirt, oil

Equipment

1 Sonicor ultrasonic mode heated ultrasonic with adjustable sweep frequency and adjustable  degas.

Chemistry

OCS ultrasonic cleaner heated to 150°F and used at a 10:1 dilution ration

OCS formula 10 phosphoric acid cleaner at a 3:1 dilution ratio

Tests

3 tests were completed.

In test 1, Carburetor was cleaned in the ultrasonic tank for 10 minutes with degas set up to help penetrate holes and galleries..  Some carbon, dirt, or corrosion remained.  Carburetor was soaked  in OCS formula 10 for 10 minutes then placed back in ultrasonic to for 10 more minutes, then blown dry with shop air.  Carburetor appeared clean but the F-10 dulled the finish in test 1.

In test 2, after 15 minutes in ultrasonic, some carbon and dirt remained & a quick swipe with a brush removed remaining dirt, then carburetor was put back in the ultrasonic for 1 minute, rinsed, and blown dry .  All parts appear o be clean and bright.

In test 3,  after 10 minutes in the ultrasonic, the dissembled carburetor had some carbon and dirt remaining.  a quick swipe with a brush removed the remaining contaminants, then it was blown off with shop air and all parts appeared clean and bright.

Conclusion

The carburetors can be cleaned quickly and efficiently by ultrasonics.  The adjustable degas is important as it helps sweep away contaminants that the ultrasonic loosen.  Some smut seems to stay on the butterflys, but a wipe with a brush removes it.  The bath gets very black and a filtration system (ultrafilter) would be recommended.
